HCPD Partners with RTHC During National Rebuilding Month
Nearly 1,000 volunteers to help rebuild homes in Howard County including help from the local police department.
The Howard County Police Department is teaming up with Rebuilding Together Howard County to provide critical home repairs to local, low-income homeowners during Rebuilding Day, Saturday, April 23rd, 2016. Including the home the police will be repairing, Rebuilding Together Howard County is rehabbing more than 30 homes across the county for elderly, handicapped, veterans and families with small children.
The partnership between Rebuilding Together and the local police department furthers community outreach efforts and strengthens ties between local citizens and the police. Funded by COLA and the Hussman Institute for Autism, two new corporate sponsors, the police department has formed a volunteer team to provide free home repairs for a low income homeowner. We are excited to once again have Allan Kittleman, County Executive, join Rebuilding Together and the police as a volunteer.
“Our focus on the well-being and safety of our communities extends beyond simply enforcing laws,” said Police Chief Gary Gardner. “It involves the overall support we strive to share with the people we serve and the neighborhoods where they live. Partnering with Rebuilding Together is an opportunity to further foster the kind of relationships, trust and transparency that are so important in community policing.”
This year, Rebuilding Together Howard County will complete over 30 homes and countless projects during Rebuilding Day, bringing together almost 1,000 volunteers to serve homeowners and communities in need across the county. With over $218,500 in grant funding this year, plans are underway to replace roofs, repair plumbing and rehab electrical and carpentry jobs for low income residents of Howard County. National Rebuilding Day has been recognized by community leaders and national corporate partners for its immediate and large-scale impact to communities across the country.
Rebuilding Together Howard County is an affiliate of Rebuilding Together, a leading national nonprofit in safe and healthy housing that provides low-income homeowners with critical home repairs. National Rebuilding Day is part of National Rebuilding Month, a month-long national call to service during the entire month of April. Nearly 20,000 volunteers will serve on over 700 affiliate-lead community revitalization projects during the entire month of April.
“With the support of the Howard County Police Department, our organization is able to expand its reach as a resource to individuals who are at risk of losing their homes,” said Ann Heavner, Executive Director of Rebuilding Together Howard County. “This unity shows the dedication and support of our local police to preserving the neighborhoods that make our county such a great place to live.”
