In January, 2015 Rebuilding Together Howard County was selected to participate in the Excellence in Governance program hosted by NeighborWorks America. Excellence in Governance is an elite 18 month program that consists of in-person training sessions, peer learning, coaching, technical assistance, board assessment, and a facilitated board retreat. Out of the 166 affiliates of Rebuilding Together, only two were selected to participate in this year’s program – Howard County and Omaha.

The Rebuilding Together Howard County board of directors learned characteristics of effective board governance and the board’s role in improving organizational health, performance and sustainability. This is a significant achievement which has taken our Rebuilding Together Howard County board from good to great. This program provided us with a strategic focus to enable the organization to successfully transition to a year round provider of free home repairs. Not to mention, upon graduation from the program, Rebuilding Together was awarded $10,000.

A celebration to commemorate the completion of the program was held on October 20, 2016. At that time, Perry Bird, Regional Manager, National Rebuilding Together presented the check to the board of directors. With the help of Excellence in Governance and the NeighborWorks America organization, Rebuilding Together Howard County is able to continue to grow and provide free home repairs to more low income homeowners living in Howard County.

Here the team shows off their more creative time during an Excellence in Governance onsite training session.

Special thank you to Hamel Builders for enabling us to participate in this program!
